Post interview reflection
From this interview I learned that in leadership related to nursing, closed loop communication is of extreme importance so that everyone is in the loop and understands what is going on with the situation. Closed loop communication is the process of confirming and cross checking for accuracy between team members. It is making sure that the information received by a provider or other team member is received as the original and intended information. Lisa described to me how important that is in critical care. Lisa also described to me the importance of checking in with yourself emotionally to ensure that you are treating your team members with the respect that they deserve and so that you can appropriately handle situations without acting out in an adverse way under pressure and stress. Lisa was saying how not keeping your emotions in check and not utilizing closed loop communication are the two most critical factors that cause communication breakdown in the ICU, leading to outcomes that are not desired for the patients and the healthcare team. There was not much that surprised me during the interview because all of her answers were consistent with how I have seen her work in practice. She works really hard to make sure everybody is on the same page moving into a situation before she responds. She emphasized the importance of being careful not to just react to a situation but to take time to stop and think through what is happening so that your response can be as calculated as possible in the moment. Some barriers that she has encountered in her leadership role have included people acting out in frustration and she talked a lot about lateral violence in the workplace such as bullying and verbal harassment of other nurses especially during frustrated and intense situations which definitely is a barrier to providing excellent care as a team. She believes that lateral, nurse to nurse verbal, bullying violence is a huge problem on the unit that she works on and is definitely a barrier that she has faced. She attributes the lateral workplace violence to the stress that the nurses have been under ever since the pandemic, people not being in check with their emotions during intense clinical situations and people not utilizing closed loop communication. I will apply this new knowledge to my future nursing career through being aware of lateral workplace violence, learning ways to develop my emotional intelligence and self awareness (I will probably start by reading Emotional Intelligence 2.0) and working to develop my closed loop communication skills.

Excellent Kyle! Lateral violence is scary and can make for a toxic work environment. I have personally learned a lot from that book.
