Application of Active Reading Skills to Work in Other Classes
The active reading skill of highlighting important information as well as summarizing the information that is difficult to grasp in my own words has helped me extensively in my anatomy class. It has helped me to understand the textbook chapters assigned for homework in a deeper manner, as well as commit them to memory better. A lot of the topics in Anatomy are processes with many steps and it helps to step back from the reading to really chew on the information that they put forth, explaining in detail what you understand about the processes in the margin of the textbook. A topic that this strategy helped me with specifically was muscle contractions, as there was a lot of new vocabulary presented to me and interactions with steps that I had to memorize. I had to reference the first text I read on muscle contractions many times and the highlighted information often brought me right to the content that I wanted fast access to in order to fill in holes of my understanding for this specific topic. When I studied for the test, color coding my highlighting from the text book chapters helped me to remember the information better. I would take the test and remember that certain information was highlighted in either yellow, or green or blue and it would resurface in my thoughts much more fluidly than if I had not done the highlighting .
