Pre Interview Reflection
I chose my subject because I worked with her over the summer and she was someone that I viewed as a mentor and role model. She would give me her perspective on certain things that would happen in the ICU and made me feel welcomed at work from the first day that I came off orientation as a CNA at South Shore. She treated me with respect even though I sort of was feeling some type of imposter syndrome and she made me feel appreciated as a student nurse.
I observed how she was a good communicator with her colleagues, making sure they were clued in to what was going on. She also seemed to work very hard to check in on her colleagues to make sure that they were doing okay and were able to manage their assignments. I viewed how she was able to stay calm in stressful situations such as how she immediately knew to hop on the computer and fulfill her role as a scribe during a cardiac arrest. She documented all interventions and made sure that essential personnel were paged to come to the code. She also went back to college to get her BSN while she was working full time through a program at the hospital partnering with Simmons so that she could be a better informed member of the team.
This is a formal leadership position in the sense that she is a charge nurse but also acts as an informal leader when she is not the charge nurse for the shift, always making sure that her colleagues are well supported. Informal leadership is leadership where a person does not hold a specific leadership title but still exhibits the qualities of being a leader. Formal leadership is where the person holds a title and may or may not exhibit leadership qualities.
I am most interested in learning more about how she manages conflict in the workplace because after working in the ICU this summer, I realized that it is a pretty dramatic place to work at that particular facility and sometimes it can be difficult to avoid that drama. I am sure she would have some good advice on how to cope with those situations that I can use to help avoid drama and miscommunication in my own practice.

Fantastic Kyle! This leader sounds like a great person for your to interview given your hopes to pursue critical care as a RN. I am excited to hear what you find out!
